David and Mary Helen Cammack and their families have lived in Pagosa Springs since the mid 1970’s. David is a native Coloradan, born in Aspen. Mary Helen was raised in Austin, Texas and moved to Pagosa with her family in 1976. Both attended PSHS together and were high school sweethearts! They married after graduating from Fort Lewis College and moved to Moscow, Idaho where David received his JD from the University of Idaho Law School and Mary Helen completed her Masters in Special Education. Moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1987, Mary Helen taught part-time and raised their two sons Jake and Dan for five years while David practiced law as a trial attorney.
In 1992 they returned home to the mountains! Living in a restored 1917 farm house, they raised their sons to love the outdoors as they do. Summers finds the Cammack family fishing, hiking, golfing, backpacking and camping. The beautiful fall colors bring on the hunting season and winter is filled with cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and enjoying the snow. Late spring brings mountain biking, gardening and rafting.
David has worked with Jann C. Pitcher since 1996 as well as Mary Helen, who divided her time as a licensed Realtor and educator. She recently retired after teaching for 26 years. Her experience included teaching every grade level except for 1st and 4th grade! Her last 8 years were spent teaching Special Education in the high school. She continues working with new teachers in the district as well as helping David in Real Estate. Both love helping people find the perfect Colorado home.
Mary Helen and David’s oldest son, Jake and his wife Codye just recently moved back to Pagosa and purchased 35 acres with a barn and are building a home that is 100% solar and off the grid. Jake received his Masters in Geology at the University of Wisconsin and worked as a Geology professor at Fort Lewis College. He is currently an independent contractor for an oil and gas firm. Codye, a Durango native, worked as a professional raft guide with OARs on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, on the Middle Fork and Main Salmon River in Idaho and on rivers in Utah and Alaska for 17 years. She currently divides her time as a massage therapist and teaching First Aid and CPR classes.
Son Dan and his wife Laurel live in Gunnison, Colorado. Dan graduated from Colorado State University with a Masters in Fishery Biology. He was recently hired as the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Southwest Region Aquatic Conservation Biologist. Laurel, who was born and raised in Pagosa Springs, graduated from Fort Lewis College with two degrees: Education and Spanish. She has worked as a wildland firefighter, a teacher in an alternative HS program and as a guide for an outdoor wilderness therapy program. She currently teaches 4th grade in a bilingual school instructing her students in both English and Spanish. Both have traveled extensively throughout South America.
